The Blessing That Is The Generosity of Strangers

November 13, 2016

The Blessing That Is The Generosity of Strangers

I was blessed to have grown up in a small town in New Zealand, where helping each other out is the norm because its completely natural. There’s no premeditated desire to get something in return. I tentatively add that it could be purely for the selfish reason, that they also get joy out of doing it. But I’m not sure it’s even that. Either way, I went out into the world believing that the blessing that is the generosity of strangers was the norm.Read More

African Albinism, The Harsh Reality

September 19, 2016

AfricanAlbinism

Traveling is always enlightening. You could call it a pay-as-you-go open university. Learning of the suffering the African Albinism population endures was one such lesson for me of just how cruel human kind can be.Read More

Cape Town Thief

September 10, 2016

cape-town-overview

It’s Cape Town, South Africa in modern times and a South African actor has just finished up a small role that had lasted a week.  He’s been paid for the week’s work, cash-in-hand which means a sizeable wad of rand notes in his pocket.Read More

Life On The Lake, Cape Maclear

September 1, 2016

Malawi

Amazingly it does still exist and I’ve found it! That all elusive piece of wonderful that travelers continuously seek. That little place devoid of too many footprints and untainted by tourist dollars.  It’s here in one of southeast Africa’s smallest countries, Malawi. And, please keep this gem a secret, it’s located on the big Malawian Lake at Cape Maclear.Read More

How To Get From Lilongwe to Cape Maclear - A Ride Like No Other

A blog about traveling around Africa is going to have a lot of posts about bus rides, after all, it’s the transport of choice.  Actually, scrap that. There is no choice for backpackers and locals alike.  But this particular bus ride was a ride like no other.  Definitely a laugh, or you might cry type of adventure.

Zambia Travelers Information July 2016

August 22, 2016

20160731_125716

I’d hazard a guess that Zambia is mainly known for the world famous landmark, Victoria Falls which it shares with Zimbabwe. The falls are themselves spectacular and on their own a good enough reason to visit this piece of Africa. Read More

Namibia Information For Travelers

August 14, 2016

NamibiaAt the moment Namibia’s tourism industry is flourishing. There no longer seems to be a low season.  The owner of one of the backpackers suggested it could be due to a couple of reasons; there are no extremist threats or bombings to worry about, the value of Namibia’s currency makes it a relatively cheap option for Africa at the moment plus it is just an amazing country to visit.Read More

How Can You Ever Tire Of Traveling?

July 30, 2016

A beautiful Herero lady let me take a photo of her in traditional outfit

I wonder, how can you ever tire of traveling? Each trip, whether a flight, mountain climb, trek or bus journey, are unique.  Each has components made up of the people you engage with, the sites you see and the things you hear. Feelings also play a part, ie the only memory of a trip could be how hard the seat was. And no two individuals taking the same trip at the same time are going to have the same experience because individuality also plays a part.Read More

Occupying Oneself Between Trips By Researching

July 27, 2016

WaterdonkeyMe, of little attention span, gets fidgety very quickly.  For example, I only managed four hours in the Louvre Gallery in Paris before I had to leave.  At home, watching a movie I tend to get up and do something numerous times; visit the toilet, go get a drink, go and find my nail file, you get the idea.  And so by day three of my stay in the Okavango Delta, I found myself occupying oneself between trips by researching.Read More

A four hour (ish) walk into the hills at the end o A four hour (ish) walk into the hills at the end of the Anniseed Valley Road. The walk encompasses crossing the river multiple times, going past a few historic copper mines, through beautiful native bush and some steep scrambly climbs.
